ABOUT THE ARTIST...Julie Carlson |
Julie is a native Californian who spent much of her life involved in performance
arts while fine arts and crafts were a constant hobby. The "hobby" became
a passion later realized when she developed her craft and began creating her unique
body casting sculptures.
Raised in an artistic family, her father is a professional photographer who enjoys
painting and her mother was once an art teacher who is still very creative. Julie
held a passion for all the arts, from poetry, songwriting and singing to theatrical
makeup and special effects to exploring various art mediums through the years.
"As an actress, I once had to have a body cast made by the special effects people.
I was intrigued and mesmerized by the process!" After exploring the technique
years later, she was hooked and her work quickly evolved into the creative sculptures
that are now CONTOURS BY CARLSON.
"I finally decided I wanted to be on the other side of the 'casting couch' and
now I am - literally! Humor aside, my work incorporates all of my favorite elements:
working with my hands, painting, sculpting, imagination, people and the human figure.
I want people to feel validated in the idea of celebrating their natural beauty in
each individual 'body of art!' This is what I want to portray in my work. It's a
preservation of our natural state and a tribute to the human figure as the oldest
art subject through history and man's eternal quest for immortality. My exclusive
one-of-a-kind art pieces are unique collectors works and wonderful gifts for lovers,
the "ultimate portrait" for couples getting married, a "3-D photo"
for pregnant mothers-to-be, time-captured moments for body builders and athletes
- any man or woman! I provide people with a personal piece of art that they participate
in for posterity! It is also an unforgettable experience. These art pieces are essentially
their 'body signatures'!" Julie has also created a new gift line of Miniature
Torsos which are small desk statuettes and penholders.
TLC, "The Learning Channel" national cable station has produced a television segment on CONTOURS BY CARLSON profiling "a day in the life of a body casting artist" and documenting her work for their series "A Slice Of Life".
Her skills have also led to creating a number of special effects for TV's "Mighty
Morphin Power Rangers" series. Julie is an emerging artist whose body casting
sculptures have been exhibited in Beverly Hills, Las Vegas, San Diego, Palm Springs
and local area shows. She is located in Palm Springs, CA.
